MMO İZMİR HANDS-ON TRAINING CENTER OPENS

The Hands-on Training Centre in İzmir, Bayraklı, was opened by İzmir branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers to train elevator assemblers, maintainers and repairers at a ceremony on 21 November 2017 with the support of the companies in the sector and especially of the members of the Aegean Elevator and Escalator Industrialists (EAYSAD). In the opening ceremony, the companies that contributed to the equipment of the Training Center were awarded with a plaque.


AYBEY ELEKTRONİK SHARED ITS SOLUTIONS TO THE CHANGES IN STANDARDS

Aybey Elektronik organized a technical training seminar on “Innovations to the Control System by EN 81-20/50 Standard and Solutions by Aybey Electronics” on 25 November 2017 in Istanbul Crown Plaza. The participants showed an active interest in the seminar, during which Aybey products were also introduced. The seminar held in three sessions gave some information on General Introduction to Aybey Elektronik Products and the EN 81-20/50-compliant ALC Control System.


EEMKON 2017

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Congress 2017 (EEMKON 2017), organized by Istanbul Branch of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers, was held from 16-18 November 2017 in Harbiye Military Museum and Convention Center in Istanbul. A panel discussion titled, “A Must in City Architecture: Elevators,” took place during the congress. Selim Dağdoğan (Mitsubishi), Melih Küçükçalık (Arkel), Melih Aybey (Aybey), Devrim Gecegezer (Genemek) and Alparslan Temur (Akantel-Z.Abegg) made presentations under the moderatorship of Fevzi Yıldırım (GTS) during the panel.


TRAINING ON EN 81-20/50 BY HAS ELEVATOR

Has Elevator held a training on “Main Changes with TS EN 81-20/50 Standards” within the organization of CE Engineering and Adana Elevator Industrialists and Businessmen Association (ADASIAD) on 25 November 2017 at Adana Anemon Hotel. An extensive participation was ensured, especially from Adana, along with adjacent cities Mersin, Hatay, Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş, in the training during which Serdar Tavaslıoğlu served as spokesperson. Certificates were awarded to the participants at the end of the all-day training.


THE WORKSHOP OF SECTOR WOMEN IN THE ELEVATOR BUSINESS WORLD MET IN ANKARA

Meeting under the concept of “High-Heel Sounds in Elevators,” women in the elevator sector came together on 10-11 November 2017 in Ankara. Women members of the workshop appeared in Atatürk’s presence on 10 November and visited the old Grand National Assembly of Turkey with an active participation, and met at the headquarters of ASFED on 11 November. The Head of ASFED, Yusuf Atik, made a speech in the meeting and expressed his support for the women. The main theme of the meeting was about the preparation and a preliminary study for bringing women in the sector together under the same roof of the association.


TRANSIST 2017

10th International Istanbul Transportation Congress and Fair was held at the Istanbul Congress Centre and Lütfi Kırdar Rumeli Exhibiton Centre on 2-4 November 2017. In the two-day-long congress, four panels were held, under the titles of “The Change in The Future Transportation: Open Innovation,” “The Integration of Transportation Modes and Local Mobility: Integration,” “Information Systems and Effective Management of Transportation Networks,” and “The Key of Integrated Planning in Transportation: The Solutions in Business Intelligence.” More than 100 companies participated in the fair, organized on a 10,000-m2 area and held simultaneously with the congress.

FABRE ELEVATOR MOVED TO ITS NEW PRODUCTION PLANT

Producing elevator cabins, suspensions and doors since 2005, Fabre Elevator moved its plant to its new location in the Tuzla Anatolian Organized Industrial Zone as of November 2017. A 4,000-m2 production area and a 500-m2 office area are in its new, more organized and productive facility. The company aims to focus more on international projects, in addition to its support for special and boutique projects, in its new plant.


ISG EURASIA AND REW ISTANBUL OPEN DOORS TOGETHER FOR THE 4TH TIME

The fourth edition of ISG Eurasia will be held from 15-17 February 2018 at the Tüyap Convention Center by IFO Fuarcılık under the topics of “Occupational Safety,” “Occupational Health,” “Occupational Security” and “Training, Consulting and Risk Analysis.” ISG Eurasia 2018, being held concurrently with the International Recycling, Environmental Technologies and Waste Management Trade Fair, REW Istanbul 2017, as in the past three years, will offer the latest products, technologies, equipment, services and applications from the business lines in every kind of sector, from the highest risk to the lowest, all in one place.


FULL SUPPORT TO INELEX FAIR BY ASFED

Chamber of the Association of Aegean Elevator and Escalator Industrialists (EAYSAD) board President Oğuz Yanık, board member Murat Demirel, and Akın Aktaş from Efor Fuarcılık visited ASFED Federation Chairman Yusuf Atik in his office on 10 November 2017 in Ankara within the scope of the 11th Elevator and Elevator Technologies Fair Inelex 2018. During the meeting, ASFED Federation assured its help within the framework of the fair and with the support of EAYSAD.


AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON ELEVATORS

An “Informational Meeting on Elevators” by Tekirdağ Provincial Directorate of Science, Industry and Technology was organized within the scope of Product Safety Week in the conference room of Çerkezköy Municipality service building. Issues regarding the safe use of elevators to be taken into consideration, and information on the timing of periodical controls, were underlined at the meeting on elevators, during which the Director of the Development and City Planning of Çerkezköy Municipality Mehmet Aksoy, the province-wide representatives of Organized Industrial Zones, district municipality personnel and authorities of elevator companies participated.


THYSSENKRUPP’S MULTI CABIN WINS DESIGN AWARD

thyssenkrupp’un hafif ve fütüristik tasarımlı MULTI asansör sistemi kabini, Alman Tasarım Konseyi tarafından “Yapı ve Elemanlar” kategorisinde 2018 Alman Tasarım Ödülü’nü kazandı. Dikey ve yatay hareket kabiliyeti ile devrim yaratan MULTI teknolojisiyle, kabinin tasarım konsepti Dresden Teknik Üniversitesi Endüstriyel Tasarım Mühendisliği bölümündeki genç akademisyenlerce, ışıklandırma ve ara yüzü tasarımı ise Neongrau firmasınca geliştirildi. Composyst GmbH şirketi tarafından yapımı üstlenilen kabin Almanya Rottweil’deki thyssenkrupp test kulesinin lobisinde sergilenmektedir. Karbon fiber kullanımı ile birlikte kabin ağırlığı çelikten yapılanlara kıyasla 100 kg daha hafiftir. Dairesel işlem paneli asansör boşluğu içerisinde kabinin yatay ve dairesel yönünü göstermektedir. Resmi ödül töreni, Almanya’da 9 Şubat 2018 tarihinde gerçekleşecektir.


ELEVATOR ACCIDENT IN ISTANBUL

A 9-month-old baby passed away in an accident on a site in Esenyurt, Istanbul. Security camera records reviewed after the accident showed a foreign mother and her two children getting onto the elevator when her 9-month-old baby fell from the stroller and became caught and crushed between the cabin and the shaft as the elevator suddenly started going upward before the cabin door was closed. The baby passed away on the way to the hospital.

INTERLIFT 2017 FAIR

Interlift Fair, renewing its record of continuous increases in visitors and participants since 1991, was held in Augsburg, Germany, on 17-20 October. A total of 574 companies introduced their products across a floor area of 44,000 m2 this year, with 60% of the 21,260 visitors coming from 114 different countries. Germany ranked first, with 169 companies, Italy had 96 companies, China had 68 companies, Spain had 44 companies and Turkey had 39 companies, making these the top five countries in participation.


SEVENTH ELEVATOR AND ESCALATOR SYMPOSIUM

The Seventh Elevator and Escalator Symposium was held in Northamptonshire, England, on 20-21 September 2017. The Symposium welcomed over 125 participants from 16 different countries. It has been observed that more representatives and international participants were available in the ever-growing event, compared to previous years. The event, which is regarded as one of the best educational global symposiums, will have another gathering in Hong Kong on 15 May 2018.


LIFTINSTUUT HOLLAND PRESS MEETING

Liftinstituut Solutions organized a press meeting and a tour on 25-26 October at its Amsterdam, Holland, center, together with participants that included Turkish national press members. The activity field and future-forward plans and projects of Liftinstituut Solutions were introduced during the meeting, at which Turkish Press Groups including Haber Turk, Bloomberg HT, Posta Gazetesi, Dünya Gazetesi and Elevator World were present.


ZORLU ELEVATOR IN ITS NEW HOME

The producer of safety-components and sector-leader Zorlu Elevator moved its Ümraniye and Çekmeköy facilities on 1 August 2017 to the new Sultanbeyli facilities, which cover a 1,700-m2 closed area. Zorlu Elevator, founded as a family company in 2000 by İsmail Melih Zorlu, is planning to reach its aims in 2018 in a very short time at its new location. The company aims to produce brakes and regulator solutions for narrow hoistways for European renovation projects, and to continue to expand its staff and machine equipment.


TASIAD INTRODUCED ITS SCHOOL PROJECT TO THE MINISTRY

TASİAD Management came together with the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Hasan Ali Çelik, on 25 October 2017. In the meeting, which was held to introduce the Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School and to hear opinions and support from the Ministry on the issue, the Chairman of the Executive Board Ahmet F. Gökhan explained about the aims of the school projects and the architecture of the projects in a detailed way. Deputy Minister Çelik stated in the meeting that they are going to support all these kinds of activities in order to spread them around, emphasizing the significance of the school project to the sector.


ARKEL GATHERED ALL UNITS UNDER THE SAME ROOF

One of the leading companies in the market of elevator control systems, ARKEL A.Ş., opened its new building on 12 October 2017, after bringing its production, storage and management units together under the same roof. Moving to its new facility, which covers a total closed area of 11,000 m2, Arkel also increased its capacity of production by 50% with the project, including the production, quality, technical services, storage, management and R&D units.


TRAINING ON TS EN 81-20 STANDARDS BY ANASDER

Anatolian Association of Elevator Industrialists (ANASDER) organized training on TS EN 81-20 Standards for Elevator Manufacturers, Assemblers, Maintainers and Inspectors on 24 October 2017. Electrical Engineer and Lead Auditor Mustafa Tutsak provided the training at the center of the association. There was an active participation and five training sessions at the all-day event.


EAYSAD UNITED STUDENTS WITH PARENTS

Aegean Association of Elevator and Escalator Industrialists (EAYSAD) and Professional Committee of Aegean Region Chamber of Industry (EBSO) met the students and parents from Seyit Şanlı Industrial Vocational High School on 10 October 2017. An informational meeting was held on the choice of the department of Transponder Repair and Maintenance, together with the school authorities, within the scope of the introduction of the elevator profession.


III. ROBOT INVESTMENTS SUMMIT

Robot Investments Summit and Exhibition, which opened its doors for the third time this year, was held on 4-6 October 2017 in Yeşilköy, Istanbul, with the contributions of 84 companies. A great number of participant companies found the chance to make new business contacts. Bringing the sector professionals and the companies that aim to use robots or increase the number of robots in their production processes together, the event was expanded by 26% on the basis of visitors.


IV. ENERGY EFFICIENCY CONGRESS WAS ORGANIZED IN KOCAELI

IV. Energy Efficiency Congress was organized by the Kocaeli branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (CME) on 13-14 October 2017 at the Kocaeli University Prof. Dr. Baki Komsuoglu Congress and Cultural Center. There was an active participation to the Energy and the Future Congress about the process of energy planning, management and energy efficiency in Turkey, with solutions.


THE INTRODUCTION OF EEMKON 2017

The 2nd Electrical and Electronic Engineering Congress (EEMKON 2017) organized by the Istanbul Branch in the name of TMMOB (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Chambers of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 16-17-18 November 2017 in Istanbul Harbiye Military Museum and Cultural Center was announced. The introduction of the three-day-long congress and exhibitions was made on a breakfast event organized in Alaettin Anahtarcı-Tülin Aydın Education Center in the Istanbul Branch of the Chambers of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 26 October 2017.


ELEVATOR AVANT PROJECT PREPARATION AND ENGINEER AUTHORIZATION COURSE IN SAMSUN

Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) Samsun Branch continued its Engineer Authorization Courses organized for its members within the scope of Vocational Retraining (MIEM) with “the Course of Elevator Avant Project Preparation Engineer Authorization” on 29 September 2017. Twenty-four Mechanical Engineers from Samsun and Amasya were involved in the training. At the end of the course, Elevator Avant Project Preparation Engineer Authorization License was given to those who succeeded in the training.


LIFTACADEMY TRAINING BY LIFTINSTITUUT TURKEY

The Liftinstituut Solutions Turkey Office organized two training sessions titled Innovations Compulsory by 2014/33/AB and EN 81-20 Standards at Istanbul Point Hotel Barbaros on 5 October 2017, and at Istanbul Marriott Hotel Asia on 19 October 2017. Participants were informed in detail about the changes and innovations compulsory in terms of the new regulations and standards in the all-day training provided by Liftinstituut Licensing Technical Manager Erol Akçay.


BURSAD ASSIGNED ITS NEW MANAGEMENT

Bursa Association of Elevator Industrialists (BURSAD) held its General Meeting of the Association on 18 October 2017. The new management of BURSAD consists of the following members: Gültekin Ali Baki (President), Ahmet Hilmi Kaşlıoğlu (Vice President), Rıfat Özgür (Accountant), Salim Uçak (Secretary), and Kamil Altuntaş (New Member).


BUILDINGS FOR LIFTS, NOT LIFTS FOR BUILDING

A seminar titled The Changes in the Elevator Avant and Elevator Application Projects was held in the Conference Room of the Gebze Chamber of Commerce on 3 October 2017, with the contributions of the Commission of Elevators established within the structure of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (CHE), Section of Kocaeli, Gebze District Representative. A number of mechanical engineers, architects, industrial engineers and elevator company executives from Gebze region attended the meeting assembled under the subtitle, Buildings for Lifts, Not Lifts for Buildings.


TURKISH FIRM’S TULIP-INSPIRED TOWER FOR DOWNTOWN MIAM

Turkish developer Okan Group plans to build a 73-story, 966-ft.-tall mixed-use tower in downtown Miami called The Sterling, Miami Today reports. Set to contain a 300-room hotel, approximately 360 residences, commercial, retail and office space, The Sterling has been recommended for approval by the Urban Development Review Board. Its design, inspired by the shape of a tulip (Turkey's national flower) with a curved, sloping crown, is by Behar Font & Partners P.A. The location is at 501 North Miami Avenue near Miami Worldcenter, Miami Dade College and transit connections. Highlights of the project include a 68th-floor restaurant, swimming pools on the 24th and 25th floors and condominiums with private terraces.

CTBUH CERTIFIES THE WORLD’S FASTEST ELEVATORS

Based on a collaboration between The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and the Guinness Book of World Records, CTBUH certified the world’s fastest elevators with completed installation works and which are in service at this point. The list, published in September, is topped by Shanghai Tower (Mitsubishi) (20.5 m/sec), followed by Guangzhou Finance Centre (Hitachi) (20 m/sec). Taipei 101 (Toshiba) ranks number three, with a speed of 16.83 m/sec.


ASFED MEETS DOKAS MEMBERS

The Elevator Industrialists Federation (ASFED) held its monthly meeting in Trabzon between September 15-17, 2017 to visit member associations and to get familiar with the association members. The Federation’s objective was to check and keep in touch with the sector’s status in Trabzon. Having heard about the sector’s problems and challenges firsthand from the company owners and representatives, the Federation members met members of the Eastern Black Sea Elevator Companies Association (DOKAS) at Trabzon Novotel on Saturday, September 16, 2017.


BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF TASIAD PAYS A VISIT TO GETA GROUP AND BOSS ASANSÖR

The All Elevator Operators Association (TASİAD) visited GETA Group on September 7, 2017 and BOSS Asansör on September 21, 2017 for the biweekly Scheduled Ordinary Board of Directors meetings organized by the Association. These meetings formed a platform for consultation about applicable stages to open TASIAD Elevator Systems Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, foundations of which will soon be laid down. In addition, applications for association memberships were accepted.


CHAMBER OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS DELIVERS BRIEFING FOR AEGEAN ELEVATOR SUPPLIERS AND MANUFACTURERS

An informational seminar regarding “Communiqué on Terms and Conditions for Elevator Design and the Practices,” organized by the Izmir Branch, took place in Tepekule Congress Centre on September 19. The meeting, during which Mr. Oğuz Yanik, the Board Chairman of EAYSAD (Aegean Elevator and Escalator Industrialists Society), delivered a speech, was attended by representatives of sector players, as well.


THYSSENKRUPP’S ROLE IN ICONIC NEW CHINESE BRIDGE

By November, thyssenkrupp plans to have completed installation of 76 escalators and 26 moving walks at the iconic new Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge in China, the world's largest ongoing sea-based construction project that links the Pearl River Delta's three major cities. At 55 km, the bridge will be one of the world's longest, reducing travel times between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau. The 102 units are going in at the 500,000-m2 Port of Zhuhai built on an artificial island. Operating in a rough environment, the heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant units are built to withstand moisture, salt and high temperatures. Three regional governments began work on the bridge in 2009, and thyssenkrupp began installation in June 2017.


KONE’S SIGNATURE ON CRUISES

The German MV WERFTEN struck a deal with KONE for the supply of elevators for two new cruise ships in its new “Global class” fleet. KONE will supply 9 KONE MonoSpace elevators, 33 KONE MiniSpace elevators and 16 KONE TravelMaster110 escalators for the ships designed for Asian cruise market. The 340m-length ships, to be built in Wismar, Germany, will each have 20 decks and offer a capacity for more than 5,000 passengers and 2,000 crew members.


SECTOR LADIES MEET IN ŞİRİNCE FOR THE THIRD TIME

Sector ladies met in Şirince on 9-10 September 2017 for the third time. During this event, where women whose hearts beat for the elevator sector come together, participants visited Ephesus and Şirince village. This event, organized by Ms. Yasemin Bulut from Önder Asansör and Selda Tokoğlu from Astor Asansör, was hosted by sector ladies in Izmir. The event witnessed speeches delivered to put the spotlight on the presence of the woman workforce in the sector, and to ensure that more women should work in the sector so as to close the shortage of highly qualified workers. Further discussions took place about the importance of vocational training and the vocational school project by TASIAD. At the end of the meeting, it was decided to organize the next event in Ankara on November 10.


MEETINGS ABOUT NEW STANDARDS ARE AT FULL THROTTLE

Following the introduction of new standards on September 1, 2017, informational meetings are going at full pace. Firstly, a briefing meeting was held about new policies applicable to the elevator industry in the course of the sector meetings organized by Gaziantep Chamber of Commerce. Another meeting in Konya was co-organized by Öztasarım Asansör Mühendislik Hizmetleri and A1Cert Belgelendirme. This meeting was attended by sector personnel from Selçuklu, Karatay and Akşehir municipalities, as well as representatives of elevator suppliers and manufacturers.


OTIS SUPPLIES ELEVATORS TO THE FOURTH-TALLEST BUILDING

Shenzhen Ping An Finance Centre (PAFC) has been officially declared by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) as the world’s fourth-tallest building. The building is equipped with 14 OTIS Skyrise® and Gen2® elevators. The building’s construction work started in 2010, and was completed in recent months. The 599-m Finance Centre is the tallest building in Shenzhen and the second-tallest building in China.


EW PROJECT OF THE YEAR 2018 DEADLINE EXTENDED

The deadline for submissions for the ELEVATOR WORLD Project of the Year Awards 2018 has been extended to October 20. The contest recognizes excellence in vertical, horizontal and inclined transportation. Winners in each of nine categories, “Elevators, New Construction”; “Elevators, Modernization”; “Escalators, New Construction”; “Escalators, Modernization”; “Moving Walks”; “Inclined Elevators”; “Platform Lifts & Stairway Chairlifts”; “Private-Residence Elevators”; and “Special-Purpose Lifts,” will receive an award and be recognized in a feature story in the January 2018 issue. The contest is open for projects that have been completed within the past two years, and both text and photos must be submitted, along with a completed entry form, via electronic file sharing, or a mailed disc and/or flash drive. THYSSENKRUPP DEBUTS AUTONOMOUS DELIVERY ROBOT

thyssenkrupp, with partner software developer TeleRetail GmbH, unveiled a driverless delivery robot for elevator maintenance at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, which began on September 14. Part of a pilot project in which robots will transport spare parts and other materials to the jobsite, it is one of two robots in TeleRetail's New Mobility World exhibit at the Frankfurt, Germany, event. The technology promises to be an “optimal logistics solution” for elevator servicing, according to thyssenkrupp. The delivery robots are 85 cm wide and suitable for traveling on sidewalks. They can carry payloads of up to 35 kg.


HITACHI RELEASES ITS NEW TX ESCALATOR TO THE MARKET

Announcing that it has released its new TX series escalator to the market for India, Asia and Middle East markets, Hitachi describes the new series as a model that meets the majority of standards. The TX series is the creation of the same concept designed for elevators without a machine room that were marketed for Asia and Middle East markets in September 2016, and its functional design easily adapts to the user’s unconscious or careless moves. Hitachi units of this new series will be manufactured in accordance with safety standards in other regions, in addition to the tight safety and quality standards already in place.

SIGNATURES IN PLACE FOR THE FIRST THEMATIC ELEVATOR VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN TURKEY

The protocol for TASIAD Elevator Systems Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, which will be a deep solution to the problem of qualified staff employment in the sector, was signed during a ceremony held in Governorship of Istanbul on August 22nd, 2017. Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin, Kartal Deputy Mayor Gulcemal Fidan and TASIAD President Ahmet Fikret Gokhan signed the protocol for the school, planned to be built on land assigned by Kartal Municipality.


ARKEL HAS NEW CEO AND NEW FACTORY

Arkel, which was established in 1998 and is one of the leading firms of sector, moved to its new building with 11,000 m2 of closed space on June 30th, 2017. With the project completed, in about 3 years the company will have a 50% capacity increase, and this is considered as an investment that will decrease card and pulley production processes. With the firm exporting to 60 countries now, Mahmut Bertan has taken up the position as new CEO from 2017 July.


EN 81-20/50 TRAINING IN KONYA

Fermator, together with Turkish distributor Fupa lift and door trim producer Ahmet Asansor, conducted an EN 81-20/50 seminar in Konya on August 3rd, on Thursday. The seminar, which was held in Bera Hotel and advertized Fermator doors with innovations that the new standard brought, occurred with broad participation from central and peripheral districts. At the end of seminar, plaques were given to senior masters who operated in Konya and contributed to the growth of sector by Ahmet Asansor General Manager Ahmet Madenci.


NAEC CONGRESS AND FAIR

NEGATIVE SCENE REVERSED IN KARSIYAKA IZMIR

Karsikaya Municipality, which kept elevators in town a tight grip with the purpose of providing citizens’ safety of life and property, made a series of inspections together with RoyalCert certification institution. INTERLIFT TO HOST MORE INTERNATIONAL COMPANIES THAN EVER

U.K. ELEVATOR SYMPOSIUM

KONE SIGNATURE FOR CHINA’S TWO IMPORTANT PROJECTS

KONE, which is one of the global producers in the elevator and escalator industry, has signed its name to two important projects in China. The company, which will supply 31 elevators to OCT Tower using advanced technology products used complex in Shenzhen in Guangdong district, South China, will supply 196 elevators and escalators to the integrated, eight-tower settlement of shopping mall and residence, office and hotel called Raffles City Chongqing.

TS EN 81-20 AND TS EN 81-50 STANDARDS ARE IN FORCE AS OF TODAY

As of today, TS EN 81-20 and TS EN 81-50 standards will be required for the registry and periodical controls of elevator avant or application projects approved by the relevant license office. As per provisional clause of “Notice on procedures and principles regarding Elevators Design,” avant and application projects approved before this date are excluded.


SCHINDLER TO RAMP UP MANUFACTURING, R&D IN INDIA

Schindler India plans to invest approximately US$26.5 million to expand its vertical-transportation manufacturing facilities and improve R&D in the Chakan Industrial Area of Pune, India, part of a larger, nearly US$80-million outlay over six years. By 2019, Schindler India plans to have an annual capacity of 17,500 elevators and 1,200 escalators, and notes it has already invested approximately US$67 million in setting up a factory, R&D center and 71-m-tall test tower with eight shafts under the Make in India initiative.


DIGIPARA FOCUSES ON CAD PRODUCTIVITY

Industry building-information-modeling (BIM) software provider DigiPara' theme at Interlift will be "Elevators. BIM. Automation." It has updated its Liftdesigner product to what it calls its "2018" edition. In addition to its typical use of drawing automation through enterprise resource planning systems, it is now also possible to load and reuse computer-aided-design (CAD) models from common CAD programs with it. Users can also export their CAD data as 3D BIM models. The 3D CAD files can come from SolidWorks, PTC Creo and Autodesk Inventor. Manufacturers can provide their entire elevator as a 3D BIM model to architects.

SIXTH IRAN ELEVATOR EXHIBITION

The Sixth International Elevator Industry and Related Equipment Exhibition took place in Tehran, Iran’s capital, on July 10-13. The expo’s 211 companies, including 160 domestic and 51 foreign, displayed their products at 10 halls and also in the open area. The fair, which also welcomed many domestic and foreign visitors, gave indication of the size of the Iranian market.


EN 81-20/50 TRAINING IN MALATYA

With the collaboration of Sistem Çelik Halat, Fupa Lift and Fermator, EN 81-20/-50 training was held on July 20-21 at the production facilities of Sistem Çelik Halat in Malatya. During the sessions, basic requirements introduced by the EN 81-20/-50 standard were discussed in general terms. Fermator doors were also introduced, and in an afternoon session of the event, which attracted intense participation from the Eastern Provinces, operator training was provided on Fermator’s VVVF5 and VVVF7 cards.


DEADLINE FOR ACHIEVEMENT CERTIFICATE FOR ELEVATOR INSPECTION STAFF: SEPTEMBER 15!

Persons who are employed or are to be employed in Type-A Audit Institutions must have an Inspection Staff Achievement Certificate from the staff certification institution by September 15, 2017, according to the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers. The certificate must be accredited according to the TS EN ISO/IEC 17024 standard under the relevant professional chamber for periodic checks of elevators. The Chamber of Mechanical Engineers has conducted elevator periodical control and certification training sessions in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir since September 2016.


ETLİK SAĞLIK KAMPÜSÜ ASANSÖRLERİ LIFTINSTITUUT TARAFINDAN DENETLENECEK

The elevators of Ankara Etlik Integrated Healthcare Campus, which is the fourth largest in the world and the second largest hospital investment in Turkey with a total bed capacity of 3,566, will be supervised by Liftinstituut. ELEVATOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR QUALIFICATION EXAMS HELD IN GIRESUN

The Giresun Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently offered the first Professional Qualification Certificate Exam for Elevator Maintenance and Repair for employees of elevator maintenance and repair companies in the province of Giresun. Employees who entered the elevator maintenance and repair level-4 exam, which is given in two stages as application and theoretical examinations, worked hard to obtain the qualification certificate.

thyssenkrupp WILL INSTALL ITS FIRST MULTI AT EAST SİDE TOWER

The first demonstrations for MULTI, the ropeless elevator with multidirectional movement ability developed by German engineering firm thyssenkrupp, were recently presented in a special elevator tower in Rottweil, Germany. The demonstrations showed what the MULTI elevator can do. By using magnetic force instead of a rope system, MULTI can move horizontally and vertically on rails. Thus, in addition to moving up and down, MULTI also offers a more functional operation by moving to the left and right. thyssenkrupp will install the first MULTI system in the East Side Tower planned for Berlin.

ASIA'S TALLEST TOWER SET FOR SRI LANKA

Diversified business company Al Aman Group has announced an agreement to build the World Capital Centre (WCC), a megatall mixed-use skyscraper in Colombo, Sri Lanka, that would be the tallest tower in Asia, the Daily Mirror reports. The WCC developer entered into a US$2-billion investment deal with the Board Of Investment on June 30 to build WCC, a 117-story, 625-m-tall tower. It will offer 1,200 residential units, 2,000 hotel rooms, 3,000 retail outlets and 5,000 parking spaces. Luxury amenities will include a "seven-star" hotel with presidential suites, complete with gold-plated interior touches. It will also have 20 swimming pools, Sri Lanka's first Michelin-starred restaurant and the world's fastest double-decker elevators, according to the report. Topping off the amenities will be an observation deck and rooftop helipad. The report said the WCC will be the ninth-tallest building in the world when completed in 2022.

The "Provision of Procedures and Principles on Design of Elevators" has been issued and become effective with publication in the Official Gazette dated 14 June 2017. This provision to offers solutions for issues regarding design, traffic account and preliminary projects that may arise prior to the elevator installation. According to the new provision, building-keepers and elevator producers shall ensure that the traffic account is arranged by the executive engineer in accordance with the properties of the building, its intended use and condition.

Taking place at the Hotel Sofitel in Berlin on May 22-24, 2018, it will focus on the presentation of original papers on all topics relevant to vertical-transportation technologies. Abstracts are being accepted through October 1. They should be no longer than 100 words (with titles no longer than 10 words) and include a classification of the topic, author name(s), company and contact information. ATTENTION FOR ESCALATORS DRAWN BY MMO ISTANBUL BRANCH

In the interest of public service, MMO has carried out periodic audits of 342 escalators and bands in Istanbul since 2015. MMO ANKARA BRANCH ANNOUNCES AUDIT RESULTS

Varlık Özerciyes, chief officer of the TMMOB Chamber of Mechanical Engineers Ankara Branch, stated that among the elevators audited in Ankara, 10,626 are tagged ‘RED’, 633 are tagged ‘YELLOW’, 4,013 are tagged ‘BLUE’ and 6,686 are tagged ‘GREEN.’ This means that about 50 percent of the elevators audited in Ankara have been tagged 'RED,’ indicating out of service.


OTIS ELECTRIC SUPPLYING 230 UNITS TO CHINESE METRO

Otis continues its strong relationship with Wuhan Metro in China with Otis Electric Elevator Co., Ltd. winning a contract to supply a total of 230 elevators and escalators to lines 11 and 21, as well as service. This brings the total of Otis units on the Wuhan Metro to more than 1,000. Line 11 is the 11th project for which Wuhan Metro selected Otis, which began working with the system in 2004. AMETAL OPENS NEW, LARGER PLANT

Ametal, which exports to 55 countries by producing cars, floor operating panels, electronic control boards, electronic load measuring and package elevator systems, has moved to a new, 7,000 m2 plant in Tasdelen from a 3,000 m2 facility in Dudullu. A large crowd took part in the opening ceremony on May 17, which included a ribbon ceremony and plant tour. A gift draw, cake-cutting and a cocktail gathering were held.


THE BEST ELEVATOR IN TURKEY SELECTED BY LIFTINSTITUUT

Dutch Liftinstituut, an international elevator/escalator certification company, brought its “Best Elevator and Escalator of the Year Competition” to Turkey for the first time this year. The competition, organized in Istanbul by the Liftinstituut Solutions Turkey office, recognized the best elevator and escalator companies of Turkey, which received their awards at a ceremony. BAKU METRO BEARS THYSSENKRUPP’S SIGNATURE

Thyssenkrupp won the public bidding for the contract to supply 25 escalators for the Baku Metro. The company will supply super-high escalators to Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, over the next three years. thyssenkrupp’s escalators will help ensure effective passenger flow for the 222 million commuters each year by installing escalators that will increase the capacity of the metro stations by 30%. Four of the escalators to be installed in the Khatai station will be the highest ever produced by thyssenkrupp, covering a height of 48.7 m.

WORLD’S DEEPEST ELEVATOR TEST SHAFT UNVEILED

PRODUCTION LOCALIZTION MOVE FROM GERMAN GIANT

With the opening on May 12, 2017 of its Pune plant, thyssenkrupp hopes to localize production by 95%. The new plant will allow thyssenkrupp to operate broadly in India's construction sector. The Samsun Branch of Chamber of Mechanical Engineers continued its Engineer Authorizing Courses on May 12, 2017 with its “Elevator Avant Project Preparation and Engineer Authorizing Course,” presented within the scope of in-service training. A total of 24 mechanical engineers from Samsun, Ordu and Trabzon, participated in the training session. At the end of the session, participants who successfully completed an exam received a “Certificate of Elevator Avant Project Preparation Engineer Authority.”


FUJILIFT OPENS LEBANON PLANT

International OEM Fujilift tells ELEVATOR WORLD it has opened a 4,500-m2 manufacturing plant in Mkalles, Lebanon.BusinessNews reported details on the project, including that it represents a multimillion-dollar investment; uses products imported from Switzerland, the Netherlands and Japan; and has an annual capacity of 1,000 elevators. Sixty-five percent of the units will be imported to Arab, African and Eastern European countries. The factory created approximately 30 full-time jobs.


ZIEHL-ABEGG TURKEY CELEBRATES ITS 10th ANNIVERSARY

Ziehl Abegg celebrated its 10th year in Turkey with a boat trip on Bosporus on May 17. RUSSIAN ELEVATOR WEEK

Russian Elevator Week was held April 25-27, 2017, at the VDNH International Fair Center in Moscow. Organized by JSK “VDNH” and the Russian National Elevator Union, the fair welcomed 178 companies from 19 countries, including Germany, China, South Korea, Italy, Turkey and Greece. The three-day fair included numerous presentations about the Russian elevator market and elevator safety. Seminars and panel discussion took place simultaneously during the course of the event.


BURSA CHAMBER OFFERS PROFESIONAL CERTFİCATES TO ELEVATOR STAFF

The Professional Competence Exam and Certification Center (MESYEB) established by the Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organizing exams for professional competence certificates in the elevator industry. Do date, MESYEB has evaluated the professional competence of about 11,000 people across Turkey. Providing exam and certification services in almost 30 cities, from Tekirdag to Van and from Antalya to Samsun, the center offers one day of free accommodation for those coming from different cities.


SUAT SEZAİ GURU APPLIED TRAINING CENTER OPENS

The Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) Istanbul branch of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers opened the Suat Sezai Guru Applied Training Center with a ceremony on April 8, 2017, in Tuzla, Istanbul. The center was created to meet the requirements of source, theoretical and practical training in several areas, including applied training on elevators. The center also will provide training for engineers and intermediate technical staff.


MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC BREAKS THREE GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS

Technology giant Mitsubishi Electric has broken Guinness World Record in three elevator categories: the fastest elevator, elevator with the longest travel distance in a building, and the fastest double-deck elevator. Located in the 632-meter Shanghai Tower, which is the tallest building in China, these elevators draw attention for their safety, high level of passenger comfort, silent operation and energy-efficiency.


ASFED’S NEXT STOP IS TRABZON

The Elevator Manufacturers' Federation (ASFED) is continuing its EN 81-20/50 training seminars across Turkey without slowing down. So far in 2017, the federation has organized seminars in Mersin on February 23, in Bursa on March 6, and in Kayseri on March 29. The next stop for the seminars will be Trabzon on May 10. The event is expected to welcome a participation as broad as the other cities.


SECTOR REPRESENTATIVES MEET IN MERSIN

Sector representatives in Mersin organized a meeting titled “Problems in the Elevator Sector, Solutions and Regulations.” The meeting was held March 28, 2017, at the Hotel Divan Mersin. Panelists for the meeting were Akar Tulucu, chairman of the Mersin Branch Board of Directors, Chamber of Mechanical Engineers; Ali Yilmaz, head of the Elevator Commission; and Elevator Unit Supervisors Fatma Gunes and Hasan Firat. The meeting drew a great deal of participation from people involved in the sector.


EAYSAD HOLDS TS EN 81-20/50 SEMINAR IN AEGEAN REGION

The Aegean Elevator and Escalator Industrialists' Association (EAYSAD) organized a training seminar entitled, “Changes Coming with TS EN 81-20/50 Elevator Standards,” held March 18, 2017 at the Izmir Best Western Konak Hotel. The all-day seminar was led by Serdar Tavaslioglu, and hosted 80 participants from the Aegean region.


GRAVIT ASANSOR MOVES TO NEW CENTER IN ATASEHİR

GRAVIT, which embodies Italy’s LAFERT, MONTANARI and TOPGEAR brand representatives moved its head office in Atasehir, Ferhatpasa. In its new office with a total indoor area of 1500 m², the company has enlarged its target to provide solutions to high-speed projects with its Italian geared and gearless engine brands. LOTTE WORLD TOWER HOLDS THREE GUINNESS RECORDS

Lotte World Tower which is the highest skyscraper in South Korea and the fifth highest in the World, opened April 3, 2017 with an amazing fireworks show. The 123-story, 555-m-tall building was constructed along Han River in Seoul. The tower has three Guinness World Records: the highest glass-floored observation deck, the fastest double-deck elevator and the longest travel with a double-deck elevator.


AH&MET ASANSOR ACQUIRES FRANCHISE OF WITTUR

Embodying several brand representatives, Ah&met Asansor, which is one of the leading elevator companies, has entered into a franchise agreement with Wittur Turkey. The company offers package elevators and components, and aims to increase its market share with Wittur products.


OTIS TURKEY OPENS MANUFACTURING PLANT TO FIREFIGHTERS

Otis Turkey has begun offering “Intervention Training on Elevators and Escalators Accidents” for Istanbul Fire Brigade coaches at the company’s manufacturing plants. The course is designed to provide fire crews with active intervention training for accident scenarios, and offers relevant technical information.


ASFED AND EAYSAD MANAGEMENT GATHER AT BREAKFAST

The Aegean Elevator and Escalator Industrialists' Association (EAYSAD) organized a breakfast on April 8, 2017, that included the participation of the Elevator Manufacturers' Federation (ASFED) Board of Directors. The traditional breakfast offered information about federation membership and took up other business, under the direction of the federation committee. Akis Asansor Konya took part in the event, as well.

HYUNDAI REPORTS MORE PROJECTS AROUND THE GLOBE

Following the release of details on the Saudi Arabian government’s large order for units at the Security Forces Medical City project, Hyundai Elevator has announced details of other large orders it has won since December 2016. Two are in Turkey: the Erzurum Healthcare Complex, and medical complex in Erzurum owned by HEKTAS, for 50 elevators and six escalators; and Inanlar Terrace Lotus, an office-shopping tower in Istanbul for eight elevators and four escalators


KERNEK ASANSOR OFFERS FULLY RUBBER ELEVATOR PIT BOTTOM BUFFER

Ucgen Muhendislik has begun manufacturing fully rubber elevator pit bottom buffers with the Kernek Asansor brand. The rubber elevator pit bottom buffer can be used in elevators operating at speeds of 1 mps or less, and is manufactured in two sizes, single and double.

3rd INTERNATIONAL EUROASIA ELEVATOR FAIR

Organized by Istanbul Fuarcılık, ASFED (Elevator Industrialists’ Federation) and TASİAD (Turkey Elevator Industrialist and Businessmen Association), which are subsidiaries of CNR Holding, the International Elevator, Escalator Industry and Technology Fair took place in CNR EXPO Yeşilköy on March 22-25, 2017. In the fair, growing day by day and held for the third time this year, 250 brands were exhibited. The fair hosted a total of 32, 922 visitors, 3,812 of which were foreigners.


15th ISTANBUL INTERNATIONAL ELEVATOR EXHIBITION

Organized by IFO Fair Organization and supported by AYSAD (the Elevator and Escalator Industry Association), the 15th Istanbul International Elevator Exhibition was held at TÜYAP Fair Convention and Congress Center on March 23-26. The 2017 meeting of Elevator Istanbul, which is one of the largest fairs in its field worldwide, hosted 279 companies from 22 different countries. It has been bringing together the elevator and escalator sectors since 1992.


WOMEN IN THE ELEVATOR SECTOR GATHERED ON 8 MARCH

Women in the sector, under the leadership of Yasemin Bulut, met March 8 at the Pendik Divan Hotel to mark International Women’s Day. At the meeting, which brought together women who have an interest in the elevator sector, it was promised that more women employees would gather at the next meeting. It was aimed to highlight women in the workforce of the sector, and to bring more women into the workforce in order to overcome a shortage of workers.


LOTTE WORLD TOWER PRIMED FOR OPENING

Lotte World Tower, South Korea’s tallest building, has been unveiled ahead of its grand opening to the public on April 3, The Korea Herald recently reported. Standing 555 m (123 floors) in Seoul, it has been under construction since 2010. It is part of the larger Lotte World project, including an existing amusement park and mall. According to the report, its “Seoul Sky” is the third-highest observation deck in the world, holding three Guinness World Records: highest glass-floor observation deck, fastest double-deck elevator and longest distance traveled via double-deck elevator. The two “Sky Shuttle” elevators run at 600 mpm, with a joint capacity of just over 100 people.


ASFED CONTINUES EDUCATION SEMINARS WITHOUT SLOWING DOWN

EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 education seminars organized by the Elevator Industrialists’ Federation (ASFED) throughout Turkey will continue without slowing down in 2017. ASFED has already held several education seminars: in Mersin on February 23; in Bursa on March 6; and in Kayseri on March 29.


MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY REUNITED AT TUYAP

The WIN EURASIA Automation 2017 “Industry 4.0” Fair, which is the meeting point of manufacturing industry in Eurasia region and where state-of-the art technology was experienced under the “Industry 4.0” motto, took place at TÜYAP Fair Convention and Congress Center on March 16-19, 2017. This was the sixth year for the fair, which was first held by Hannover Messe Bileşim Fuarcılık A.Ş in 2012. Hosting 1,336 participants from 35 countries, the event was carried out in nine halls and consisted of four main subjects: Automation EURASIA, Electrotech EURASIA, Hydraulic & Pneumatic EURASIA and CeMAT EURASIA.


ELEVATOR TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MET IN BURSA HOSTED BY ASFED

Organized by Ministry Of Science, Industry and Technology and hosted by ASFED, the ASTEK Sub-committee workshop was held in Bursa on March 4-5, 2017. Committee members at the workshop took part in discussions that covered sub-diffraction of periodical control criteria over a draft study on electric and hydraulic drive elevators; criteria that can be transferred from red to yellow; a road map regarding control list or lists to be prepared based on the EN 81-20 standard; requests for change on regulations and notifications; and new proposals and assessments regarding the subject.


LIFTINSTITUUT SOLUTIONS AIMS TO MAKE TURKEY AN INVESTMENT CENTER OF THE MİDDLE EAST

Dutch Liftinstituut, which inspects elevators and escalators, is preparing to sign new projects which will make Turkey an investment centre of the Middle East. One of the leading companies worldwide, Liftinstituut achieves over 30% growth rate every year in parallel to the developments in the construction industry. The company aims to raise this figure over 50% in 2017.


TASIAD APPROVES NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS

A meeting of the Ordinary General Assembly of Turkey Elevator Industrialist and Businessmen Association (TASİAD) was held March 18, 2017, in the Titanic Business Kartal Hotel. During the meeting, the Board of Directors and Audit Board were discharged and a new Board of Directors and Audit Board, consisting of 9 full members and 9 substitute members, were approved unanimously with the regulation amendment.


MERİH ASANSÖR INTRODUCED ‘MARS ELEVATOR’ BRAND

Merih Asansör aims to start production in its 100,000 m2 indoor production plant, which will be equipped with both smart and environment-friendly systems. Merih will increase its foreign business with its “MARS Elevator,” in order to export doors and cars, the most produced elevator parts, as well as elevator systems. Merih also aims to add products that are not produced in Turkey but purchased from abroad into its product range.


ELEVATOR INDUSTRY IS EXPECTED TO GROW BY 6% UNTIL 2021

Research and Markets, one of the world’s market research organizations, has announced its “Elevators and Escalators Market by Type, Service, Elevator Technology, & End-use Sector - Global Forecast to 2021” report. According to this report, the industry is expected to grow by 6% through 2021.


ROYALCERT INCREASED MOTIVATION

RoyalCert Certification and Supervisory Services Corp. carried out the 2nd Motivation and Education Camp in Antalya Akka Antedon Hotel on 18-20 March 2017. Organized with the staff in order to evaluate 2016 and to determine aims for 2017, the event was completed productively. With the education given in order to improve technical know-how, the staff was also enabled to be ready for the changes to be made by giving education on TS EN 81-20 and TS EN 81-50 standards.


KONE TO SUPPLY 418 UNITS TO RIYADH METRO

KONE has won a contract to supply 418 elevators and escalators to Line 3 of the Riyadh Metro in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Commissioned by Arriyadh Development Authority, Line 3 is the longest of six lines, spanning 41 km and encompassing 22 stations. The order consists of 262 escalators and 156 elevators, including 96 panoramic elevators. The units will be equipped with the E-Link remote-monitoring system. Pierre Liautaud, executive vice president for KONE South Europe, Middle East and Africa, observed the Riyadh metro is one of the world’s largest infrastructure projects.


HITACHI TO OPEN ELEVATOR ENGINEERING EDUCATION CENTRE IN CHONBURI

Hitachi Ltd and Hitachi Building Systems Company has opened their first training centre for engineers in the elevator and escalator industry, outside Japan’s borders. The facility, in Chonburi, Tailand, went into service in February 2017.

THOUSANDS EXPECTED FOR INTERNATIONAL EURASIA LIFT FAIR BEGINNING MARCH 22

The Fair will bring together service providers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers, who will have on display new and innovative products for the elevator and escalator industry. Last year’s event gave 400 brands the opportunity to establish new business associations with buyers, both domestic and foreign. More than 20,000 people visited the 2016 event, organized by ASFED (Lift Industrialists Federation, which represents 12 sector associations, including TASIAD), along with the ITF-Istanbul Fair Organization of CNR. The 2017 event runs March 22-25.


TURKEY LANDS İN LIFTECH EXPO JEDDAH

65 companies from 12 countries took part in LIFTECH Expo Jeddah held for the first time in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on February 9-12, 2017. The fair which 30 companies and a huge number of visitors from Turkey participated was visited by 3.212 people. The fact that almost half of the exhibiting companies at LITFECH Expo Jeddah were from Turkey was an indicator that the export targets of the constantly-growing industry focused on this region. Since Jeddah is at a close distance to Mecca, a majority of the exhibitors and visitors from Turkey enjoyed the opportunity to have their Umrah visits.


UMRANIYE MUNICIPALITY STARTED ELEVATOR INSPECTION SERVICES

Ümraniye Municipality performs periodic control activities of elevators located within the boundaries of the district by the “Ümraniye Municipality Licensing and Inspection Department Elevator Inspection Services” unit. Ümraniye Municipality was the first municipality in Turkey to implement this service. As of 2017, “Umraniye Municipality License and Inspection Directorate Elevator Inspection Services” has started to operate in order to ensure the safety of the citizens who use elevators within Ümraniye District boundaries with Ümraniye Municipality quality and to reach all elevators in a better way.


UNEMPLOYED YOUNG PERSONS ARE TRAİNED AS ELEVATOR MAİNTAİNERS AND REPAİRERS

Held as part of the “National Vocational Standards and Qualifications and Elevator Maintainer and Repairer Vocational Staff Training Project” (UMES-AY), the Elevator Maintenance and Repair Regulation Seminar was completed. The final stage of UMES-AY organized by the Turkish Metal Union and funded by the European Union and the Republic of Turkey was held in Bursa on January 30, 2017. For the final stage of the sequence of seminars held in Istanbul, Ankara and İzmir on January 18, 23 and 25, various company representatives and experts were present at Baia Hotel.


KINETEK RESTRUCTURES TURKEY OFFICE, SETS ASSERTIVE GOALS

Kinetek, Inc., has reorganized its Turkey office and is instituting assertive targets for the Turkish market. İbrahim Tiftik, Turkey and Middle East component sales director for Kinetek, will manage the office, which has undergone both organizational and strategic changes. For 2017, Tiftik said, the office is making it a priority to meet the Turkish elevator industry’s need for high-quality gearless motors. ESKISEHIR ELEVATOR ASSOCATION AFFILIATED WITH THE FEDERATION

The Elevator Industrialists' Federation (ASFED) Assocation Pressitents Meeting was held at Ankara Crowne Plaza Hotels on Saturday January 28, 2017. In addition to the general meeting, a seminar was held on EN-81-20 Standard, during which the trainings given before the Vocational Qualification Exam were discussed, 2016 was reviewed and a route map was determined for 2017. A TRAINING ON MARKET SURVEILLANCE AND INSPECTION HELD AT ATO AKADEMI

At Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO) Assembly Hall, a training on Market Surveillance and Inspection was held on Saturday January 28, 2017. AYSAD HOLDS ITS 46TH ORDINARY GENERAL MEETING

46th AYSAD Ordinary General Meeting was held at Bostancı Green Park Hotel on Thursday January 19, 2017. No member and presidential election was held during the Ordinary General Meeting. The Board of Directors and Supervisors were acquitted. 2016 annual activity report and audit reports were read out. İzzet Güven, AYSAD Chairman of the Board, and Safa Targıt, Vice Chairman of the Board, gave speeches focusing on the position of AYSAD in the society. As for the wishes and desires part, mainly VQA certificate and EN 81-20 standard were focused. During the General Meeting, Harun Şimşek was given a plaque for his 16-year efforts. The meeting concluded with the dinner participated by the members.


TSI INSPECTS 342 THOUSAND ELEVATORS

Faruk Özlü, Minister of Science, Industry and Technology, announced that TSI (Turkish Standards Institution) has inspected 341 thousand 645 elevators until now. Evaluating the elevator inspections carried out by TSI throughout 2016, Minister Özlü explained that the inspections were performed by 207 engineers trained in this field. According to the information provided by Özlü, TSI signed protocols with 304 municipalities in 58 cities in 2016. Almost 110 thousand elevators were inspected. During these controls, around 47 thousand elevators were detected to pose a danger for the safety of life and property. At the end of follow-up controls, 60 percent of these elevators were made convenient for use.


BURSAD WILL PERFORMING WORKS FOR SCHOOL ELEVATORS IN BURSA

There are currently 375 schools having elevators in Bursa. Bursa Provincial Directorate of National Education Department of Energy Efficiency responsible for the maintenance and repair works of these elevators negotiated with BURSAD to cooperate for this duty. As the result of the meeting held at BURSAD official building on December 14, 2016, it was resolved that elevator maintenance and repair companies shall ask their engineers for an "Office Registration Certificate" and elevator H module certification, and BURSAD member companies shall draw up pre-inspection maintenance contract free of charge.


EAYSAD DRAW UP MEMBERSHIP CONTRACT

The traditional breakfast organization by the Aegean Elevator and Escalator Industrialists' Association (EAYSAD) was held at Best Western Hotel in Konak, Izmir on Saturday January 21. At the meeting attended by Association Chairman Oğuz Yanık and a large number of members, VQA certificate examination and certification process, drawing up the 2017 Price List for Monthly Maintenance and Materials and a constant maintenance contract were discussed. The Membership Contract issue which was brought up to the agenda during the previous meeting was ready to be submitted for signature. Targeting at the solution of the problems experienced by the members, the contract includes professional ethical values and basic rules.


HYUNDAI ELEVATOR SUPPORTS EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT

After opening a class for elevators and escalators at İnönü Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School last year, Hyundai Elevator Turkey continues special education in different concepts. Receiving the lesson of "Introduction to Elevators" at the specially-prepared training hall of Hyundai Elevator Turkey, 20 students enjoyed the opportunity to observe and examine all the elevator components in operation thanks to the completely glass-coated panoramic elevator shaft as well as theoretical information.


CABLES FOR ILGAZ TUNNEL SUPPLIED BY PRYSMIAN GROUP TURKEY

Prysmian Group Turkey, the Turkish operation of Prysmian Group which is one of the world-leading companies in the cable industry for energy and telecommunication, has brought life to Ilgaz July 15 Independence Tunnel with its cables, which connects Central Anatolia to the Western Black Sea Region and was opened to service on December 26. The tunnel reduces the passing time over Ilgaz Mountain road to 8 minutes, which used to take almost 35 minutes. Prysmian Group Turkey supplied halogen-free energy, low-voltage, fibre optic and data cables with FE180 feature to be used in the project. The length of the cables manufactured by Prysmian Group Turkey for Ilgaz Tunnel is almost 513 kilometres.


WITTUR ANNOUNCES MARKET LAUNCH OF ITS BRAND NEW HEAVY-DUTY MACHINE WSG-52

Wittur announces the launch of their high-rise gearless traction machine WSG-52. The WSG-52 marks the top of the gearless machine range of Wittur Electric Drives GmbH based in Dresden, Germany. With a nominal torque of 9.200Nm in the WSG-52.3 execution, this machine is designed to lift as much as 9.800kg in 2:1 roping. The travelling speed goes up to a breath-taking 12m/s (in 1:1 applications) which places Wittur in a unique position as independent component manufacturer. Its solid design with a nodular-graphite cast iron housing, centrally fixed traction sheave and up to 4 safety brakes allows 520kN shaft load.


WORLD'S FIRST COMPOSITE LIFT" UNVEILED IN SINGAPORE

Singapore Lift Co. (SLC) unveiled what it describes as "the world's first composite lift," 8, on January 11 in Singapore. SLC is a joint venture between Far East Organization, Woh Hup Pvt. Ltd. and Pronus (HK) Ltd. Made of lightweight composite materials used in place of steel in industries such as aerospace, Formula 1® racing and yacht building, 8 is "a game changer in its field, having the potential to revolutionize the overall building and construction industry." The lift is initially available for installation in low-rise buildings and will eventually be extended to serve up buildings with up to 20 floors. SLC Managing Director Alister Bennett tells ELEVATOR WORLD cabins will be manufactured at its facility in north Singapore, with other components sourced from various countries. The facility's initial annual capacity is 1,000 units, and SLC hopes to design and build all components in Singapore within the next five years.


ELEVATORS BY MERİH RISE FOR A FAVOURITE HOUSING PROJECT IN IRAQ

One of the most recent overseas projects Merih applied to was a housing project in Iraq. In VIP CLASS Apartment, a prestigious housing project in Shaqlawa, which is one of the favourite tourist towns in Iraq, Merih has been the preferred brand for elevators. In the housings including 12 apartments having 16 floors, there are 24 elevators with transporting capacities of 450 and 800 kg.For the elevator project planned to cover a distance of 1,6 meters per second, the cars by Merih, which are designed in special dimensions, will be used. As for automatic doors, robust automatic elevator doors designed for heavy-traffic buildings have been preferred.

BORA GÜLAN HAS BEEN ASSIGNED TO A POSITION AT OTİS TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR 71 COUNTRIES

Having managed Global Strategies and major projects worth more than 15 million USD as a Global Vice President at the Otis headquarters in London for two years, Bora Gülan has been appointed as president for Otis Northern-Central Europe and Africa to be responsible for 71 countries. Gülan, the new Otis Northern-Central Europe and Africa president to whom Otis General Managers in Northern-Central Europe and Africa will report with the new reorganization at Otis, said, "The region I am responsible for covers an important part of Europe, which has been determined as the elevator base by Otis, and a great and developing market like Africa. I aim to increase the market share while offering strategic guidance for the activities performed by Otis in this context in 71 countries."


HOUSING SALES IN 2016 END WITH A RECORD

Turkish Statistical Institute announced the data regarding housing sales in 2016. Despite the recession in the Turkish economy in the third quarter after 7 years, the housing sales broke a record in 2016 with 1 million 341 thousand 453. The industry representatives state that the record was achieved particularly with the significant increase in the sales on loans after September and October 2016. The housing sales increased by 4 percent in 2016 compared to the previous year. Istanbul ranks the first with the sales of 232 thousand 482 housings and a share of 17,3 percent. Istanbul was followed by Ankara with 144 thousand 570 houses and 10,8-percent share and İzmir with the sales of 81 thousand 316 housings and a percentage of 6,1. 449 thousand 508 of the total houses sold all around Turkey was in mortgage sales while 891 thousand 945 in other sales forms.

MEDITERRA CAPITAL ACQUIRES THE MAJORITY SHARE OF ARKEL

Mediterra Capital, the private equity fund growing successfully and rapidly and investing in the industry-leading companies, has acquired the majority share of Arkel, one of the pioneering players in elevator technology in Turkey. Melih Küçükçalık, one of the founders and current partner of Arkel who will keep his position at the company after the partnership, explained that Mediterra will play a significant role in the corporation of Arkel. Ceren Coşkuntürk, one of Mediterra Capital partners, said, “We will make Arkel, the first brand that springs to mind when it comes to technology in the elevator industry, a global player.”


ELEVATOR TECHNICAL COMMITTEE CONVENES

The 16th meeting of Elevator Technical Committee (ASTEK), the most effective formation in the elevator industry which brings together the public- and private-sector enterprises, was held at the Conference Hall of the Corporate Office of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology in Ankara on December 22, 2016. At the meeting of ASTEK, it was decided to set up a subcommittee for the revision of the control criterion for elevator annual inspections. The issue of changing the period of 30-60 days could not be resolved.


THE SEMINAR ON TECHNICAL REGULATIONS IN ELEVATORS IS HELD

With the contributions and support of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, TASIAD organized a seminar on the Technical Regulations in Elevators at ITU Maslak Idris Yamantürk Hall on Thursday, December 15, 2016. During the seminar, Industry and Technology Specialist Murat Yazgan from the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology Department of Market Surveillance and Inspection; Leyla Bayraktar Çiçek from the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology Provincial Directorate of Market Surveillance and Inspection; Oktay Akman from the TSI Inspection and Surveillance Centre; and Işık University OHS Program Instructor Yücel Karakuş made presentations.


HAS ASANSÖR R&D CENTRE GOES INTO OPERATION

In consequence of the audits carried out by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Has Asansör was entitled on December 7, 2016, to become Turkey’s 307th R&D Centre. Starting to manufacture at a small workplace in 1980, Has Asansör took the first steps of serving the elevator industry by manufacturing rubber and plastic parts. Today, the company manufactures and exports semi-automatic doors, fully-automatic doors, elevator cabins and suspension, control panels, and hydraulic-elevator systems to 63 countries.


AYBEY ELEKTRONIC PROVIDES TRAINING IN SAMSUN

Aybey Elektronik and Vemas Asansör held a training session at Hampton by Hilton in Samsun on the new elevator standard EN 81-20/50 and What It Has Brought For Elevator Control Systems and ACT Control System. Elevator installation companies, representatives from public institutions and enterprises and non-governmental organisations in the industry took huge interest in the full-day training.During the session Aybey Elektronik General Manager Melih Aybey and Aybey Elektronik technical staff made presentations.


ASO PROFESSIONAL COMMITTEES 53rd YEAR AWARDS CEREMONY HELD

ASO Professional Committees’ Joint Meeting and 53rd-Year Awards Ceremony was held with the participation of Minister of Economy Nihat Zeybekçi at ASO 1st OSB (Organized Industrial Zone) on December 22. During the meeting, 13 group representatives shared the industry’s problems. The problems of the elevator industry were presented by ANASDER Chair of Board of Directors Gürhan Cihaner. In his speech, he revealed the unfair competition caused by the tax-free components as well as the safety- and quality-related problems as the result of price-based approach of the contractors who has a decision-making position in choosing elevators but do not assume any responsibilities.


THE OBLIGATION OF SIZE CHANGE FOR ACCESSIBLE ELEVATORS DELAYED

The Regulation on the Amendment in Planned Areas Type Building Bylaws drafted by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization went in effect being issued in the Official Gazette dated December 8, 2016. Accordingly, the date statement “1.1.2017” in the provisional 10th article of the Planned Areas Type Building Bylaws published in the Official Gazette dated 2.11.1985 with the repeated number 18916 has been revised as “30.6.2017”. According to the results of this amendment, the obligation that the cabin size of an accessible elevator shall be for a minimum of 10 people has been postponed within the borders of some metropolitan municipalities.


LIFTINSTITUUT PROVIDES TRAINING AT KARTAL MUNICIPALITY

Liftinstituut, one of the leading institutions for certification in the elevator industry, provided training at Kartal Municipality. The four-day training seminar was attended by R&D Specialist Adem Doğan, R&D Support Electrical Technician Metin Özbey and Mechanical Engineer Bekir Yaşar. Continuing the training that is in line with demands, Liftinstituut aims to spread training throughout the entire country.


PROCESS STARTS FOR THE SUPPORT OF 50 THOUSAND TL FOR SMES

Within the scope of the Operation Capital Loan Interest Support program of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Organization (KOSGEB), the upper limit of the loans to be provided per company will be 50 thousand liras. The complete interest rate of the loan, which will be available through banks, will be covered by KOSGEB. The loan period will be a total of 36 months without interest, no payment for 12 months, and the remainder is to be paid in equal instalments every three months.The program, which will provide operational capital loan interest support for SMEs up to 50 thousand liras, will be available for all the SMEs that are currently registered in the KOSGEB database.


THYSSENKRUPP SEED CAMPUS – TRAINING CENTRE OPENS

Thyssenkrupp opened its new training centre called SEED Campus at Ataşehir on December 5. The new office building where thyssenkrupp Asian Office is also positioned is located here. The building also has storage and spare-parts areas. At the centre, trainings will be provided throughout the year, simulators will be tried and tested, and sector-related meetings for elevator technologies will be held.Thyssenkrupp Elevator will maintain its operations for training educated human resources at the training centre, which it has put in service in Istanbul.

ASFED GIVES AWAY BATTERY-OPERATED CAR TO A DISABLED CITIZEN

ASFED gave as a present a battery-operated vehicle to an orthopedically-disabled citizen living in Ankara. Planning to making such an attempt within the scope of December 3 International Day for Persons with Disabilities, ASFED first spoke to Kemal Kart, Chair of Association for Orthopedically-Disabled People. ASFED procured the battery-operated vehicle for the young man in Ankara thanks to the guidance of Kart. During the delivery of the battery-powered vehicle, ASFED Chairman Yusuf Atik was accompanied by Kart. The citizen given the vehicle is unable to use his hands and feet. The vehicle supplied by ASFED will serve as hands and feet to him.
